Although the school year has just begun, the Beaver Dam Eagles are already involved in many activities which highlight the various fun opportunities for the community.
On Thursday, September 6, top eagle, Phyllis Leavitt, and her colleagues welcomed parents to the annual Open House. The program began with a colorful PowerPoint Presentation which showcased students from preschool through sixth grade already engaged in many learning activities.
This was followed by Mrs. Anita Burton leading the staff in a rousing rendition of "Do You Believe in Magic?" Evidently they all do because, in spite of daunting cutbacks in personnel, the teachers still focus on the magic of helping students do their best, both academically and as responsible school citizens. Guests were treated to scrumptious ice cream and strawberries provided by Miss Susan's restaurant and served by Mrs. Cheryl Edwards and Mr. Sonny Graham.
Students of the month were recently selected from each class. Those chosen were honored for their friendliness. The following eagles were called to receive their awards in front of the entire flock during the daily Patriotic Ceremony on Friday, September 7. Receiving the awards were: Melanie Moreno from kindergarten, Montana Smyke from first grade, Dominic Robles from second grade, Yarely Garcia and Levi Burton from third grade, Nancy Lopez from fourth grade, Oscar Plancarte from fifth grade, and Kynnedie Ellingford and Jaylee Sawyer from sixth grade.
On Tuesday, September 11, students with perfect attendance waited expectantly as one name was chosen to receive the coveted prize for monthly attendance. Amid squawks of excitement Jaden Sawyer heard his name announced. He was given the choice of selecting the envelope or the Mystery Door. Jaden selected the envelope and went home a little bit richer because it contained dollar bills. What could have been hiding behind that door?
These are just a few of the extra opportunities students at Beaver Dam Elementary are given to celebrate and enjoy school. It is a close-knit and caring community that richly deserves the nickname of being "the hidden gem of the Valley".
