The Mesquite Writers Club is a group of about twelve locals who are dedicated to the art of writing, and are looking to get more members. “I would like to see the club become a strong group of people that grows and develops,” said Debbie Smith Beatty, who is going into her second year of running the club.
The styles, types of stories, and writing experiences vary among the different members, yet the group has the same intention for all of them. “The purpose of the writers club is to promote writing of fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, and to encourage people to write,” said Beatty.
The writers group welcomes writers of all levels including beginners who are looking for help on how to get started, or want feedback on what they have written. It’s also helpful for people who want to improve their writing skills, or hope to work in publishing. “We have several people who are in the process of writing a book,” said Beatty. Other members have already written a book. “In the club we have many published writers who are very good people,” said Beatty. The group encourages useful feedback, constructive criticism, and a dedication to writing.
Currently, the writers club is putting a book together as a group. “This is the first book we have attempted to publish. It’s a collection of short stories, fiction and non-fiction,” said Beatty. The group expects to publish more books in the future.
Beatty became fascinated with writing during college because of a teacher she had. Her teacher was strict and pushed Betty to write in ways she never imagined. “Before that semester was over I worshiped that teacher and I loved writing,” she said.
One of the ways Beatty finds inspiration to write is by reading. “My favorite author is John Steinbeck. When I read a Steinbeck book it was like a movie was flashing before my eyes. I have a goal to become a writer like Steinbeck. I don’t think I am going to achieve it but I am working toward that goal,” said Beatty.
The Mesquite Writers Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are located at the Mesa View Hospital. The next meeting takes place on Sept. 13.
