YouTube sensation The Piano Guys to play in Mesquite

The Piano Guys, featuring Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson, will appear in Mesquite on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the VVHS Theater, sponsored by the Mesquite Arts Council.

This performance follows three national television appearances in recent weeks by The Piano Guys, including the “Katie Couric Show,” “Tonight Show” and “Today Show.”

The Piano Guys have more than 350,000 likes on Facebook and 140 million views on YouTube. The group found its following from its unique self-made videos on YouTube, originally designed to promote one member’s piano business.

Jon Schmidt was born and raised in Northern Utah and has been playing the piano most of his life.  He combines classical training, hip rhythms, keen songwriting skills, slapstick comedy, and a little rock’n’roll in his unique performances.  As an artist in his own right, he has eight albums and seven piano books of song transcriptions

Nelson is a cellist, songwriter and arranger. His adventurous approach to the cello combines traditional cello playing with percussion effects.

Their new album The Piano Guys was released on Oct. 2 by Sony Masterworks.  It includes imaginative mash-up arrangements from sources as diverse as Michael Jackson, Mozart, David Guetta, One Direction, Adele and Christina Perri, as well as an original song “Arwen’s Vigil.”

Tickets are available at the Mesquite Community Theater box office, Friday, 4-7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.  Prices are $12 for adults and $8 for students.
