With the weather cooling, it is time to develop those creative art skills.

And the Virgin Valley Artists Association (VVAA) is prepared to help.

VVAA sponsors weekly art and pottery classes for adults.  Weekly classes in drawing and painting are held at the classroom adjacent to the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery.  These classes, taught by experienced instructors are “walk-ins,” meaning students can arrive and pay for that day’s class with no advance enrollment.

Mondays:  Drawing and pencil art, 1p-4p, instructor Bunny Wiseman, $10

Tuesdays:  Intermediate watercolor painting, 9a-noon, instructor Char Lang, $12

Tuesdays:  Oils and other mediums, painting instructor Bunny Wiseman, 1p-4p
Wednesdays:  Beginning watercolor painting, instructor Char Lang instructor,  4 class series. The cost is $40 with your supplies or $60 when supplies included

VVAA sponsors frequent workshops in many art disciplines.  A 10-hour intensive “right brain” drawing class by Susan Bergstrom, is scheduled Sep 27, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sep 28, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.  She will train her students to tap their inner creative ability through proven techniques that draw from their own right brain functions.  Enrollment for her class is required in advance at the gallery. And there a $100 fee.  Bergstrom offers this class to help benefit the VVAA community art education program.

Katherine Cole teaches her popular jewelry beading workshop on Oct. 18. The fee is $35, with materials included.   Other one- and two-day workshops in watercolor, new materials and textures, mosaics and other topics will be offered throughout the fall.

The VVAA Pottery Studio at the Mesquite Campus is the place to learn and practice pottery making.  The studio is open to the public for use of the equipment and kilns, and wheel- and hand-built potter construction classes are offered, starting various dates:

Monday, Oct 1:  Hand-built pottery with Char Lang, $40 for four classes plus materials/firing

Tuesday, Oct 2:  Hand-built clay techniques with KoKo, $60 for four classes plus materials/firing

Wednesdays:  Wheel Pottery with Wendy Umberger, 9 a.m.-noon

Saturdays:  Pottery skills with Wendy Umberger. Times TBA.

Those wishing to see the pottery studio can visit during hours of operation: Mondays 12-3 p.m., and Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., during September. Open studio hours will vary in October with start of classes.

VVAA offers art and ceramics supplies for student classes and individual pottery projects at its supply outlet at Campus Room 31 , open 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

More information about all classes and VVAA children’s art program is available at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery, 15 W. Mesquite Blvd., open 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., Tuesdays-Saturdays, during September. The gallery also will be open Mondays starting Oct. 1.  Phone 702-346-1338.  VVAA’s art education program is partially funded by Nevada Arts Council, NEA, City of Mesquite, Greater Mesquite Arts Foundation and generous donations from businesses and individuals who help promote the power of the arts in the community.
