Register Now For Early Spin Class

The Mesquite Recreation Center is offering an Early Spin class.
The class involves riding specially designed stationary bicycles, challenging not only the rider's physical strength but mental strength, too.
The class is taught by professional trainer Charlie Proper on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 a.m.
Each class is limited to 13 participants.
The new session begins Sept. 2.
The intensity of the workout is regulated by the amount of resistance applied to the flywheel of the spin bicycle. [Read full story]

More than 1,500 young football players and thousands of family members overwhelmed the sports fields at Mesquites Regional Park on Saturday night, Aug. 28, as Youth Football USA held their annual "Midnight Madness" in Mesquite for the first time.
Hundreds of cars were parked up to a quarter mile from the facility down Hardy Way.
As many as 58 teams from Cedar City, St. George, Hurricane, Mesquite, and Moapa Valley make up the local Youth Football USA league.
Six invited teams from Henderson also scrimmaged against each other throughout the evening.
The event began at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies followed by a giant luau that included five roasted pigs.
“Youth Football USA is a national organization promoting youth football from the second to eighth grade levels," explained Chad Baird, co-founder of the organization.  [Read full story]

Rec Center Offers Tips On Exercise For Older Adults

Engaging in regular physical activity yields many benefits, regardless of age.
For children, exercise is important in healthy growth and development.
Preventing chronic disease and helping maintain an appropriate body weight are among the most important exercise-related benefits for individuals of all ages.
Aerobic activity is critical for preventing chronic disease and helping control weight.
Individuals should engage in at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity five days per week, or at least 20 minutes of vigorous activity three days per week.
A combination of moderate and vigorous activity can be used to meet the recommendation. [Read full story]

 
Rec Center To Host NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition

Mesquite area youth will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the Mesquite Recreation and Parks Department hosts an NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Hunter Sports Complex, field #3, located at 500 West Mesquite Blvd .
The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8 to15.
"This competition allows children to showcase their talents and skills in punting, passing, and kicking the football, with scores based on distance and accuracy," said Nicholas Montoya, Recreation and Parks Supervisor. "The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program has been a staple in the NFL for many years and we have had a few youth from the valley and surrounding areas qualify for the nationals, which are held at one of the home sites of an NFL Playoff game." [Read full story]
