The Virgin Valley High volleyball team picked up a huge victory over Chaparral to keep its postseason playoff hopes flickering.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Chaparral, 3-2, to pull into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot from the Sunrise League. Both teams are 2-7 in league play heading into the regular-season finale on Wednesday.

Virgin Valley will host rival Moapa Valley (7-2 league, 15-18 overall) at 6 p.m. in the VVHS gymnasium while Chaparral will face Sunrise Mountain (1-8, 2-16). The top four teams from the league advance to the 3A Southern Regional tournament next week.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Chaparral by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 17-15.

Senior Jaylee Whipple had an outstanding night for VVHS recording 10 kills, five blocks, five digs and eight service aces. Junior Areli Ponce had nine digs to go along with five aces, three kills and one block while senior Maleena Felshaw added 10 digs, eight kills and two aces.

Senior Sydney Ludvigson had 33 assists, four aces and three digs with junior Alyssa Ponce adding 16 digs and junior Nathalie Lagamayo notching eight kills.

Virgin Valley lost its next two matches following the victory over Chaparral. The Lady Bulldogs fell to defending state 3A champion Boulder City, 3-0, and lost 3-0 to Somerset-Sky Pointe Monday night in North Las Vegas.

Against Boulder City, Ludvigson and Alyssa Ponce each recorded 12 digs while Areli Ponce had nine digs.

In the Sky Pointe match, Ludvigson had eight assists and four digs, Alyssa Ponce 12 digs and Felshaw three kills. Whipple chipped in with two kills, two blocks and two service aces.
