It began in 2009 as “Bikers Giving Back” but has morphed into what the group now calls “One Hero at a Time.”

Founder and President Rick Hillis said, “Each year thousands of soldiers pay a heavy price for our country; they sacrifice life and limb for our freedom.”

One Hero at a time is everyone’s opportunity to give back to a soldier and his family who have paid dearly to protect and serve our country.

On Saturday, June 30, Mesquite Gaming and the Virgin River Casino hosted the Sixth Annual event, which honored Veteran Reuben Cervantez.

Cervantez deployed to Iraq in 2005 with the Marines and came under frequent attacks by multiple Al Qaeda insurgents. During his time, he sustained multiple injuries that led to his medical retirement from the Navy in 2012, and currently suffers from PTSD, TBI and a spinal cord injury. Among his various military awards and decorations is the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V” Distinguishing Device (for valor).

Ed Newman was honored to serve as the event’s MC and especially touched when his late grandfather, WWII Veteran and much loved Ed Guiterrez was honored.

Entertainment was provided by the Randy Anderson Band, Identity Crisis, Most Wanted and Closure. There were special video showings and also on-going raffle drawings. Bar concessions were open and veteran information tables were set up providing guest with plenty of resource information.

The day began with an out and back ride; riders returned about noon and then the party really started. Donations came in from several biker clubs and all the individuals who attended.  All money collected went straight to the honored veteran even those who won the money from the 50/50 raffle donated the winnings back to the veteran.
