On Saturday, May 19, most of the first seven bouts in Barry Meyer’s Tuff-N-Uff series and Mesquite Gaming’s Mayhem in Mesquite XIV was action packed especially in the first and sixth bouts.

From the very beginning mayhem emerged, fans could tell that this would be an evening of excitement; especially after the winner of the first bout was carried out by Mesquite Fire and Rescue on a stretcher.

Bout #1 went the full three rounds, both John Varela, fighting out of Fusion MMA in St. George, UT and Denis Actis from Albuquerque, NM fighting out of Jacksonwink MMA, were exhausted at the end.

Cody Hamm (L) who fights out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, NV went against 155 pound Bryan Arreaga who fights out of DAB Gym in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Hamm came into the fight with a 6-4 record against Arreaga’s 5-1 but tapped out in the second round sending Arreaga away with the first 155 pound weight class title belt.

The winner was declared by unanimous decision to be Actis who was able to stand with the referee and opponent when the announcement was made but not a moment longer. The minute the referee let go of Actis’ arm, his knees let go of him and the declared winner sank to the floor.

Many who were in the cage at the time rushed to his aid and with the help of two individuals he was able to get to his feet and onto a stool but not for long. Actis sank from the stool to the floor and then the Rescue team stepped up. Mesquite Fire and Rescue workers went to work quickly supplying him with oxygen and strapping him onto the board so he could be carried out to a stretcher; he was sent to Mesa View Hospital.

According to one of the MMA referees, the decision of the judges stood, Actis was still the declared winner and was sent out only because of sheer exhaustion and possibly slight dehydration; he did not sustain an injury or get hit hard enough to cause any damage during the fight.

In bout #6, women came out harder hitting than the men and stayed that way until the end of their three round fight. Maria Jose Favela who fights out of Entram Gym in Tujuana, Mexico and Baja, CA. went against Eliza Rushton form American Fork, UT in a bloody battle to the end when Favela won the fight by unanimous decision.

Fans enjoyed the first seven rounds but it was the three title fights that had everyone’s interest up.
