The Virgin Valley High baseball team heads into the annual Cowboy Classic in Las Vegas during spring break having won four of its last five games.

The Bulldogs pounded visiting Pahranagat Valley of Alamo, 15-4, Friday evening at Bulldog Field in a game that was shortened to five innings because of the NIAA Mercy Rule. The previous day, the Bulldogs suffered a 3-2 setback to visiting Desert Pines of Las Vegas.

The results leave Virgin Valley at 5-3-1 overall heading into tournament play.

The Bulldogs buried Pahranagat Valley with a 12-run second inning that broke the game wide open. Despite giving up four runs to the Panthers in the top of the third that cut the margin to 13-4, VVHS scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the contest early.

Virgin Valley collected six hits in the game with each one leading to a run. Easton Jensen, Jayden Perkins and Kayden Peterson recorded two hits apiece. Jensen drove in three runs while Perkins and Peterson had two RBI each.

Pahranagat Valley didn’t help itself defensively as the Panthers committed nine errors in the contest.

Peterson started on the mound for the Bulldogs going 2.1 innings with five strikeouts while Jensen relieved hurling the final 2.2 innings and notching three strikeouts.

Thursday’s game against Desert Pines featured a pitcher’s duel between Virgin Valley’s Dillan Fuqua and Steve Laureano of the Jaguars.

Fuqua was outstanding in defeat for the Bulldogs scattering seven hits with no walks and striking out 13 DP batters. Only two of the three Jaguar runs were earned.

Laureano gave up just four hits but walked seven Virgin Valley batters and struck out five.

Booker Wakefield, Josh Abbott, Dakota Munford and Jensen collected singles for the Bulldogs with Jensen and Perkins scoring the only runs for VVHS.

Following Spring Break, the Bulldogs return to the diamond on Monday to host Pahrump Valley at 3:30 p.m. They will travel to North Las Vegas on Tuesday to face Mojave.

The Sunrise League opener will be April 9 at Boulder City against the defending league champion Eagles.
