The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldog basketball team, were in position to hang a 3A Southern Conference Champion banner in their new gym as they dominated the Mojave High School Rattlers through three quarters of play in the finals at Del Sol Saturday afternoon. The Lady Dawgs were up 33-23 after three periods put could not stop a surging Rattlers squad in the final 8 minutes of play. The Dawgs dominated play in the paint as they almost doubled team rebounds for the game. Lady Dog Savannah Price led the early surge for the Dawgs with 12 points in the first half. The Rattlers outscored the Dawgs 12-1 in the first three minutes of the fourth period to take a 35-34 lead and never looked back for the win. Although controlling the boards, Price had 11 plus 20 points and teammate Taylor Barnum added 12 boards and 13 points to pace the Dawgs. Bulldog fans should be proud of their hometown girls as they now travel to Reno to face Churchill County (Fallon) Friday night at 6:15pm at Reno High School. The winner moves on to the 3A State Championship game at Lawlor Events Center on Saturday Feb 25. The Greenwave went 16-0 in Northern 3A play and 23-4 overall. The number one seed defeated rival Lowery High School 66-40 to win the North on Saturday. The Greenwave are led by the Otuafi sisters, Leta and Leilani who are only juniors. Fallon defeated the Dawgs in last year’s state tourney 52-40 before winning over Lowery for the Nevada 3A State Championship. The Greenwave are 48-0 in 3A play the past three seasons.
