Even a three-week layoff couldn’t slow down the Virgin Valley High flag football team’s rushing attack.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t skip a beat as they returned to the field following the holiday break to romp past host Chaparral, 40-6, in the Sunrise League opener Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Virgin Valley rolled up 362 yards on the ground and ran for four touchdowns to continue its ground assault on opponents this season.

“We ran the ball really well,” VVHS head coach Joey Bowler said. “Our running game has been outstanding all season. All of our backs have speed, so the defense can’t just focus on one player.”

Katie Zuniga scored two touchdowns on runs of two and one yard while quarterback Kallie Graves threw two touchdown passes – 30 yards to Madison Cheney and 28 yards to Markell Ludvigson – to help guide Virgin Valley to a 27-0 halftime advantage.

Graves ran eight yards for a score in the third quarter as the Lady Bulldogs extended their margin to 33-0. Zuniga scored her third touchdown of the night on a one-yard run in the final period.

Zuniga finished the game with 88 yards on 14 carries. Nikita Eskelsen led Virgin Valley in rushing with 93 yards on 13 carries. Emily Teerlink added 33 yards on five carries while Julia Ramirez notched 31 yards on four carries.

Graves completed 10-of-16 passes for 137 yards as Virgin Valley amassed 499 yards of total offense.

On the defensive side of the ball, Nataly Serna led the Lady Bulldogs with six flag pulls while Alyson Cook and Ramirez had four each. Ludvigson had two pass breakups and one interception.

The win improves Virgin Valley to 6-3 overall while Chaparral falls to 4-4.

The Lady Bulldogs will host rival Moapa Valley Wednesday and Tech Friday. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. starts inside Wilson Stadium.
