More than 100 participants took part in this year’s Sectional Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition hosted by Nevada ASA Junior Olympics Softball in Las Vegas on May 9 at West Flamingo Park.

For the fourth year in a row, 11-year-old Kurt Felix qualified for the team championship competition, which was held at Petco Park, the Major League Baseball Stadium for the San Diego Padres. He traveled to San Diego to compete in the regional contest on June 10.

Felix scored in the categories as follows: Pitch 300, Hit 380 and Run 397 for a combined total of 1077, which was compared to all the scores in the Major League Baseball Team Championships. They took the top four boys in his age division from all over the United States and Canada to compete for a national championship.

According to a press release issued on June 27, Felix was notified by Major League Baseball that he will not be attending the All-Star Game in Florida.

He dominated the Pitch, Hit & Run in San Diego and they matched his scores up with the entire league, Felix ranked 11 out of 85,000 kids in his age group, (11-12) years old.

Nick Montoya, director of Athletics and Leisure services, said, “This is something for him and his family to very proud of, The City of Mesquite is very proud of him and his placing in the National Competition. He is a player in our VVLL and his family is very active in youth and adult baseball.”

The MLB Pitch, Hit & Run competition allows boys and girls from ages 7-14 to showcase their talents in pitching, hitting and running with scores based on distance, accuracy and times. “It was a great event for the kids and to watch them compete against other kids from all over at a higher level of competition in baseball and softball,” Montoya said.

The City of Mesquite Department of Athletics & Leisure Services would like to congratulate all the competitors! “Our youth of the Virgin Valley Little League did an amazing job and represented our valley very well, we are very proud of them and their accomplishments.” Montoya said.
