The Virgin Valley High softball team ran into two storms this week as they traveled to Pahrump Valley on Tuesday, March 28, to face the Trojans in a doubleheader. The day ended with the Lady Bulldogs on the short end of identical 17-2 scores. The games were called after three innings of play, as the new “mercy rule” went into effect. The game ended as soon as the Trojans led by 15 runs. Bulldog Savannah Price continued to lead the Dawgs getting two of the Dawgs’ five hits for the day.

The Lady Bulldogs faced Cheyenne on Thursday, March 30, in a raging wind storm. Cheyenne blew into and out of town with an 8-5 win over the hometown Dawgs. Before the dust settled, the Dawgs were down 6-0 after one half inning of play. Errors and pitching control problems haunted the Dawgs once again as the Desert Shields scored five runs on one hit.

The Bulldogs managed to cut the Cheyenne lead to 6-3 after one inning. Ashlee Faught reached first on an error, Taylor Barnum was hit by the Cheyenne pitcher and Calee Clem drove in Faught with a double. Bulldog Jessie Barnum walked loading the bases. Abbie Boss singled on a wind-blown hit to left driving in two runs.

Cheyenne extended its lead to 7-3 in the top of the second on two hits. The Bulldogs recovered one run back in the third on a double by Taylor Barnum and a single by Taylor Ostrowski making the score 7-4 after three innings. The Desert Shields got their last run in the top of the fourth making the score 8-4. Bulldog pitcher Clem battled the wind and Cheyenne the rest of the way giving up only one hit. The Bulldogs managed to score one run in the sixth inning on a Clem single and Ostrowski sacrifice bunt making the final score 8-5 in favor of Cheyenne. The loss evened the Bulldogs preseason record to 9-9 going into today’s Sunrise League opener against Del Sol High School in Las Vegas. The Dawgs faced Tech on Monday, April 3, before hosting rival Moapa Valley on Thursday, April 6.
