The Virgin Valley High School softball team began league play on Friday, March 31, with a tough 3-2 loss at Del Sol High School. The Dawgs fell behind early once again and had to battle back from behind. The Dawgs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 2-1. Bulldog Melissa Vanorsdale singled to begin the first and scored on a fielder’s choice ground out by Ashlee Faught.

The Dragons took the lead on a hit batter and two walks loading the bases. Two runners scored on a wild pitch by the Dawgs. Bulldogs pitcher Savannah Price settled down and struck out 10 Dragons the rest of the way. The Bulldogs tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning on a Dragon error and singles by Vanorsdale and Ally Wright. The Dawgs threatened in the top of the sixth inning with a runner on third base with no outs. The runner was left stranded as the Dragon thrower forced three straight pop outs to the infield to stop the threat. The Dragons scored the winning run on a triple and Bulldog fielding error making the final 3-2 for the Dragons.

The Bulldogs followed Friday’s loss with a 6-3 loss at Tech on Monday, April 3, in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs scored first to lead early 1-0, but the Roadrunners took over from then on putting up six runs after five innings of play to lead 6-1. The Bulldogs attempted to come back but did not have the firepower against the Tech thrower. Bulldog Vanorsdale finished the two games with three hits to lead the Dawgs offense.
