In their annual dinner honoring local fire, police and community members, the Mesquite Elks Lodge #2811 served a record crowd of nearly 60 members plus fire and police personnel and community members.

Firefighter Troy Robb was the first to receive his award. Robb was a major force in getting upgraded SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) units for Mesquite Fire Rescue over the past year. The devices are necessary for firefighters who enter a burning building or encounter a low oxygen environment.

For the Mesquite Police Department, Detective David Alejos was honored for his work in 2016 that brought down a high-level drug ring that had come to Mesquite. His time and skills as a detective enabled him to gather the evidence and cooperation from outside law enforcement to take down the ring and continue a successful outcome in the war on drugs that Mesquite constantly encounters.
