In their annual dinner honoring local fire, police and community members, the Mesquite Elks Lodge #2811 served a record crowd of nearly 60 members plus fire and police personnel and community members.
Firefighter Troy Robb was the first to receive his award. Robb was a major force in getting upgraded SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) units for Mesquite Fire Rescue over the past year. The devices are necessary for firefighters who enter a burning building or encounter a low oxygen environment.
Detective David Alejos, second from left, was honored for his work in 2016 in the ever-growing narcotics presence in Mesquite. For the Mesquite Police Department, Detective David Alejos was honored for his work in 2016 that brought down a high-level drug ring that had come to Mesquite. His time and skills as a detective enabled him to gather the evidence and cooperation from outside law enforcement to take down the ring and continue a successful outcome in the war on drugs that Mesquite constantly encounters.

The Citizen of the Year award went to Nick Montoya, the director of Athletics and Leisure Services for the City of Mesquite. Montoya has been a key factor in the success of several events sponsored by the city, including Mesquite Days, the Mesquite Recreation Center and most recently, the Desert Color Dash held earlier that day.
