‘Iron Woman’ Savannah Price throws a strike against Pahranagat Valley Thursday night in the Dawg Pound.

It took the Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldog softball team two games into their own Sherm Bennett Memorial Tournament to find their comfort zone to begin the 2017 season. The Bulldogs gave up big innings in their two losses to Pahranagat Valley and Lincoln County. The Dawgs were up 2-1 against Pahranagat before allowing 12 runs in the top of the third evening to fall to the Panthers 13-2. Lady Dawg Savannah Price had a triple to lead the Dawgs offense. The game was a warmup to Friday afternoon’s tournament opener.

 

The Bulldogs began official tourney play facing the Lincoln County Lynx in their opener losing by a big 13-4 score. A big inning was the Dawgs bane again as they gave up 10 runs in the top of the third inning. Eight walks by two Bulldog pitchers put the Dawgs in a whole which they could not recover from. Price again led the Dawgs with two hits. The loss dropped the Dawgs to the consolation side of the tournament.

 

Walk-off grand slam in final inning defeats Lady Dawgs 10-8

It was the Bulldogs turn to have a big inning to open the game against Spring Creek (Elko) Saturday morning. The Dawgs put up five runs in the first inning and two in the second to lead early 7-0. Two walks, hit batter and an error by Spring Creek opened the gates for the Dawgs. Abbie Boss and Melissa Vanorsdale had R.B.I singles for the Dawgs. Singles by Taylor Barnum, Price and Vanorsdale brought in the two runs in the second inning for the Dawgs. Spring Creek’s hitters woke up in the third bringing two runs across on an inside the park home run to cut the Dawgs lead to 7-2 after three innings. Two hit batters and a Spring Creek error increased the Dawgs lead to 8-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Spring Creek cut the Bulldogs lead to 8-5 on two singles a hit batter, error and walk after four innings of play. Starter Price, pitching for three straight games seemed to be tiring during the inning. An error, two singles and a walk set up the winning home run by Spring Creek to end the game. The Dawgs had 8 hits, led by Taylor Barnum and Vanorsdale, with two hits each.

 

Lady Dawgs end tourney with 9-3 win over Valley

The Lady Dawgs put up 7 runs in the first two innings to take a 7-2 lead after two. Pitcher Price led the Dawgs in the rally with a double for two runs batted in. Calee Clem relieved Price to begin the fourth inning and held Spring Creek to one run the rest of the way. The Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth and final inning to make the final score 9-3. Taylor Barnum led the Bulldogs with two hits. Price scored three runs for the Dawgs. The Bulldogs next home game is on Monday March 22 against Mojave High School.
