Mesquite is periodically treated to a true virtuoso, thanks to Clark County Library

District sponsorship of his guitar recitals. Renowned classical guitarist Peter Fletcher again enthralled a full house as he at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery on Friday, March 3.

Frequently playing in prestigious venues throughout the world, Fletcher enjoys returning to Mesquite, where he is always warmly received. He is a regular performer at Carnegie Hall, New York City, with his next concert there on May 6.

In his Friday recital, Fletcher ran a gamut of classical guitar solos, from Bach favorite Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Cantata No 147) and Erik Satie’s innovative Gymnopedie No 1, to classic Catalonian folk songs and Oracion by Andres Segovia.

Known for his technical capability, Fletcher is also noted for his poetical phrasing and dynamic and tonal changes. His illustrious career evolved from his early studies, at age 7, under John Sutherland and was the youngest student to perform in his 1980 class under Jose Tomas, teaching assistant to Andres Segovia.

Fletcher writes guitar transcriptions for many of the works he performs. He performed

his own transcription of Caprice Opus, No 24, written by legendary violinist Niccolo Paganini,

in his Mesquite appearance. Explaining his affinity for the originality of French composer Erik Satie, he has recorded a full album of Satie’s work. During the concert, many audience members listened intently while resting their eyes and letting the chords wash over them. Others listened, gazing far away to their own thoughts and dreams.

After his recital, Fletcher chatted with members of his audience and signed copies of his CDs. His virtuosity became even more astounding when it becomes apparent that he strums and picks his guitar with his right hand, while being naturally left-handed! He shrugs and says he

needs to use both hands equally well. Indeed, his hands and his guitar express his talents magnificently. See more about Fletcher online at www.peterfletcher.com and watch him on YouTube.
