The Virgin Valley High School’s Boys Golf team played in Las Vegas at the Wildhorse Golf Club on March 22 with gusty winds that averaged 30 miles per hour.

Overall, the team took second to Boulder City competing against three other teams.

Hogan Fowles, a senior, scored 77 to place second at the match. “Hogan was tied with Boulder City’s number one (Kyler Atkinson) all the way down to the 18th hole,” said Coach Josh Tyrell. “Hogan bogeyed and Atkinson parred so it was a good round for Hogan.”

Nathan Hulet, a junior, scored a 91 and tied for sixth place. “I was nervous for the first league match,” said Hulet. “I had played at Wildhorse twice in the past and was not encouraged by my past performances. I had set a goal for myself this year to qualify for the regional tournament and I needed to average a score of 90 or better for the duration of the season. This was a great first step to reaching that goal and I plan to improve in our next match at Wildhorse.”

Brayden Johnson, a senior, shot a 111 and both Jake Hampsten, freshman, and Britton Wilson, a senior, missed the cut.

The boy’s team will return to Wildhorse March 27 which is calling for windy conditions once again. “Wildhorse Golf Course is a short, narrow golf course with trees lining basically every fairway so even with the slightest miss, you are finding yourself having to punch shots below trees and work around them. Not very easy,” said Tyrell.

Their next match will be on April 3 when they play at Las Vegas National Golf Club against Chaparral.
