hughes-nora-picobitNora Brooksby Pointer Hughes, age 96, quietly passed away at the home of her daughter, Ethel Pointer Richards Kimura, in Westminster California, early in the morning of Wednesday, November 16, 2016 . Born December 12, 1919, and raised in Fredonia, AZ, she was the first of seven children born to John and Melinda Judd Brooksby.

On August 21, 1936, she married James Carl Pointer in Flagstaff, AZ. They had one daughter, Ethel, and lived in the San Diego area for nine years but were later divorced. She and her daughter moved to St. George where she worked at Dick’s Café and JC Penney’s. She graduated from Dixie High School with Ethel’s graduating class of 1955 and was respected and admired by class members.

On June 20, 1964, she married Charles Esmond Hughes of Mesquite, NV in the St. George Temple. They moved to Mesquite where she lived until 2012. Esmond was in ill health for the last few years of his life and Nora was trained to dialyze him in their home for his last seven years. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1985. She was a hard worker and had several jobs, including the curator of the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum for twelve years. She was well-known as “Aunt Nora” by family and friends in the town. Her kindness to others proved her family was the most important thing to her.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life, Nora loved the Gospel with all her heart and lived it every day of her life, serving in many Church organizations and as a faithful Visiting Teacher.

She is survived by her siblings Carl Brooksby of Mesa, AZ; Emma B Mitchell of St. George, UT; Preston Brooksby of Jordan, UT; and Glenda B Johnson of Delta, UT.
