VAN DEWEGHE SHOOTS BEST ROUND WITH MMGA

Frank Vandeweghe shot his best round ever with the MMGA on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Falcon Ridge. And he did it by bombing the most difficult back nine with birdies on 10, 11, 13 and 15 for a score of 37 and matched that score on the front nine adding his fifth birdie of the round on hole three for his great 74. That gave him medalist honors by eight shots over Tim Miller (82), Bill Irace(82) and Gary Denhalter(82). Superb 18 holes of golf! That must have been fun.

Don Mannon (84) matched his front nine of 37 and Ken Ward shot the best nine holes of the group with a one over par 36. Irace and Ray Halicki (89) tied for first place low net. Irace won it outright with a double bogey on the first handicap hole. Third was won by Denhalter with net 70 with his par on 13 breaking a two way tie with Rory Tomsic (84) and net 70 dropping Tomsic to 4th.

Ward and Mannon were tied for 5th with net 71’s which Ward won with his bogey while Mannon recorded a double bogey on the 13 hole. Bubba Petrick had the putt of the day on the par four 4th. His putt from 42 feet was from the back of the green up a slope and broke 33inches right to left to save his par. He also had a great par four on 18 when he putted from 64 feet up to the back of the green, breaking five feet, hooking above the hole and rolling back down to within 10 inches of the cup for his par.

IRACE GRINDS TO FIRST PLACE

There is a saying in golf that after a golfer has one or two bad holes and plays well after that that he had to “grind” his way to a good round. Bill Irace did just that on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the CasaBlanca golf course. After taking a triple bogey on the third hole he managed to shoot 43 on the last six holes on the front side. He followed that up on the back with a nice two over par 38 for a round of 81 and won medalist honors.

The next best was Paul LeVan at 84. It must have been the severe cold morning temps. New member Gary Neumann seems to have settled in with the group shooting a 44-42 with a birdie on 16 and finished with first place low net at 68. Nice round Gary!

Ed Hoepfner (87) playing at his old home course netted out at 72 for second place. Hal Rundle (86) was alone in third with 74. Four players tied for the last two pay off slots. Ray Halicki (96), Tom Durenberger (91), Paul LeVan (84) and Pat Smitty (89) were all at net 75. Their play was indicative as to how they placed.

Smitty won 4th with a bogey on the first handicap hole. Durenberger beat LeVan when he scored double, bogey, bogey and LeVan shot double, bogey double. Halicki was nowhere to be found.

Tim Bergstrom had the shot of the day and for the month of November. His second shot on the par four ninth landed in the left bunker. From 34 feet away he blasted his sand shot into the flag dropping straight down three inches from the cup and rolled in for a fantastic par.
