Lady Dawg Abbie Barnum made an amazing goal over a Dragon Wall high into the net on a direct kick giving the Dawgs a 2-0 lead. Barnum had the ‘hat trick’ three goals for the game.

The Virgin Valley High School girls soccer team came out in pink uniforms for their match against Del Sol High School Wednesday, Oct. 5, in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and won easily 8-0.

“I’m not sure what to expect from our girls today coming off a loss,” Coach Bob Snell said before the match. “We haven’t played in a week and it’s hard to keep sharp.”

It became apparent early that the Dragon game is what the doctor ordered as the Lady Dawgs went into attack mode and took aim at the Dragons goal. Carla Correa had the first attempt followed by four straight shots by striker Abbie Barnum, the last on a rebound and spin move striking goal off the Dragon goalkeeper giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.

A Bulldog went down a tough Dragon block at the 17 minute mark giving Barnum a direct kick at goal from 20 yards out. Barnum’s goal went high into the net above the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper for a 2-0 Bulldog lead. Barnum had two more attempts followed by one goal shot by freshman Ally Wright; all were blocked by the Dragons.

Madison Cheney got on the scoreboard a minute later on an assist from Dalylah Chavez upping the Dawgs lead to 3-0. Three minutes later, Wright struck goal on a Kallie Graves assist increasing the Bulldogs lead to 4-0. The rout was on as Wright scored her second goal on a Kennadi Ludvigson assist making the score 5-0.

Bulldog Hannah Haviland struck the last goal of the first half 27 minutes in on an assist from Barnum giving the Dawgs a 6-0 lead. Coach Snell attempted to slow down his troops by substitutions and moving his offensive stars to defense. The Bulldogs outshot the Dragons 18-0 in the first half of play.

The second half began with Barnum getting the hat trick one minute into the period for a 7-0 advantage. Katie Zuniga would add the last goal of the game making the final score 8-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. “I liked the aggressiveness of our girls,” said Snell after the game.

The Dawgs record went to 4-1. They will host Boulder City on Thursday, Oct. 13.
