The Virgin Valley High School volleyball team went 6-3 over the past weekend at the Boulder City Invitational against top southern Nevada competition. The Bulldogs went 3-0 the first day Sept. 16 defeating Calvary Chapel and Sunrise Mountain 2-0 before holding off Las Vegas 2-1.

The Bulldogs came out strong against Calvary Chapel led by Bernice Fiso with 8 kills and Emma Barnum with 7. Barnum had 16 digs in the two sets helping the Dawgs to the 25-22 and 25-23 wins. The Bulldogs faced an easier opponent in Sunrise Mountain in their second match winning easily 26-6 and 25-11. The Lady Dogs faced a stronger opponent in their final match of the day against Las Vegas. The Dawgs won the first set 25-19, lost the second 25-20 before putting Las Vegas away 15-7. Fiso had 10 kills and Barnum had 7 digs to lead the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs came out Saturday morning, Sept. 17 with confidence in their first sets of the day but faced eventual tournament champion Sierra Vista. The Mountain Lions won 28-26 in a single set match. The Dawgs then lost to Basic by a score of 25-14 before beating Mojave 25-9. The Lady Dawgs then blew out Spring Valley 25-7 and 25-23 in a close second set.

The Bulldogs then went up against Pahrump Valley losing 25-20 in their first set before rebounding to take the second set 25-23 and the final 15-8. The Bulldogs faced Las Vegas in a rematch in their last sets of the day. The Bulldogs won a tough first set 26-24 but lost the second and third sets 25-20 and 15-8.

It was a long day of volleyball beginning at 7 a.m. and finishing late afternoon. Leading the Bulldogs in a hard day’s work were Fiso with 37 kills, Brianna Todd with 24 and Barnum with 22. Setter Calee Clem had 87 digs for the Dawgs. Barnum added 45 digs to her day’s work.

The Bulldogs ended the preseason with a 13-9 record and begin 3A Sunrise League play on Tuesday Sept. 20 hosting Boulder City at 6 p.m.
