The huge slide at the Mesquite Recreation Center’s outdoor pool was popular enough, with students racing the stairs to the top and then sliding down consecutively as fast as they could. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.

In addition to the other activities, many students chose to show off their talents on the diving board like this one, who did a cartwheel into the water. Others chose to make as big of a splash as they could and some participated in a belly-flop contest. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.

Summer officially ended Monday as students headed back to classes in Nevada. To help ease them into it, Virgin Valley High School students were treated to one last night of fun at the Mesquite Recreation Center outdoor pool. While the remainder of the facility is under its annual maintenance, the outdoor pool was graciously made available thanks to an interlocal agreement between the Rec Center and Clark County School District, who compensates the facility for operations and staffing, according to Nick Montoya, the Director of Athletics and Leisure Services for the City of Mesquite. During the night, students played volleyball in the grass, slid down the monster slide and played basketball in the pool. Many chose to stay dry, however, and just mingle with their friends at the picnic benches around the facility. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.
