After going 4-4 in the past weekend at the Las Vegas Invitational, the Virgin Valley High School girls volleyball team easily defeated Sunrise Mountain, 25-9, 25-7 and 25-7 Tuesday night, Aug. 30, in the Dawg House.

Led by Emma Barnum and Bernice Fiso, the Dawgs dominated the smaller and inexperienced Miners. The Dawgs trailed early 4-1 to the Miners before showing their dominance outscoring the Miners 24-5 the rest of the match. Leading the way for the Dawgs were seniors Barnum, Fiso and Dylan Bryant with two kills apiece. Fiso had three service aces in the game.

The second match of the game was an almost error-free game for the home team as they put up seven service aces on the overwhelmed Miners. The Bulldogs led by a score of 17-7 as Barnum began her serve; eight points and four aces later the match ended with the Dawgs winning 25-7.

The third and final match was a mirror image of the second as the Dawgs dominated from start to finish. Senior Shalee Hafen got the ball rolling with four straight service aces to give the Dawgs a 5-2 lead early in the match. Fellow senior Brianna Todd made her presence known with two straight kills. The Dawgs had nine aces for the game.

When the dust settled Barnum had eight aces, Fiso dominated at the net with five kills, Hafen added five aces and Bryant finished with four kills for the Dawgs.

“We played well,” said Bulldog coach Laura Barnum. “It will be a dogfight between us and Moapa and Boulder City when we reach the playoffs. The realignment made our league stronger and the other weaker.”

The Lady Dawgs face Division 2A Calvary Chapel Friday night Sept. 2 in the home gym.
