Was the ‘People’s Choice’ winner of the Surreal Art exhibit held at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery in June an omen of things to come? With approximately two dozen entries in the ‘It’s Surreal’ Art exhibit/competition, the ‘People’s Choice’ winner was a portrait caricature of Donald Trump painted by local artist Floyd Johnson.

The gallery held the reception for the June exhibit, sponsored by the Bank of Nevada, on June 23. Ribbons and cash awards were handed out to the winners of the competition.   First, second and third place winners were chosen by members of the Virgin Valley Artists Association. Carly Gil won first place for her ceramic sculpture ‘Arthropod.’ Second place was won by Pam Olsen who created a dry media drawing titled ‘Golf Nut.’ Olsen said Bunny Wiseman talked her into entering the piece and she’s grateful for the push. Third place went to Walt Adler for his digital photography piece titled ‘Fantasy Canyon.’

People’s Choice went to VVAA member and political artist Floyd Johnson for an acrylic painting titled ‘The Donald.’ Sponsor’s Choice was won by an out of town artist, Philip Monlton, who created a colorful, multi-media piece called ‘Fuente Del Cielo.’ Best of show went to artist Judith Hetem for a mixed media piece titled ‘The Last Harvest.’
