On April 27 VVHS student-athletes Marlene Quiarte, Josh Bishop and Kai Mitchell were honored at a banquet at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas for their appointment to the Southern Nevada Top Ten Student Athletes of the Year.

Ten students from Northern Nevada and 10 students from Southern Nevada High Schools were chosen for their outstanding achievements in the class room and in their sport endeavors. The twenty students honored were chosen from a pool of thousands of seniors throughout Nevada.

The criteria for the award is high, as each student must not only be the top athletes in the Silver State but those student-athletes who exemplify total school and community involvement. Special consideration is given to students who participated in multiple sports, other school and student government activities and community service projects while at the same time maintaining a high academic status within their school.

All candidates must be seniors, achieve high scholastic honors in their respective schools, have taken a number of honor classes, participated in multiple sports and received team and individual achievement. They must be recommended and must write an essay. A panel of judges selected the students from a large group of candidates.

VVHS must be proud of the fact that only two other schools in the state had more than one student chosen for such a prestigious award. Las Vegas High School and Galena High School (Reno) had two students chosen. Each student received several awards including a $500 scholarship at the banquet.
