To help kick off Mesquite Days 2016, the Mesquite Days Celebration Committee is promising a bigger and better year for Family Fun Night at the Old Mill Ball Parks and the Mesquite Recreation Center.

At the ball fields, local businesses and nonprofits will have free live music, bounce houses, sack races, wheel barrel races, egg spoon race, catch the greased pig & chicken, jell-o eating contest, hot dog contest, carnival games and of course, the famous tug of war competition, which has expanded this year to include both a water and a mud pit tug of war. Only the winners will remain dry.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. and will close around 8:30. For more information, contact Krissy Thornton at 702-346-5290 or kthornton@mesquitenv.gov.

Kids and adults enjoyed their fair share of eating contests for free at the first annual Family Fun Night in 2015. This year looks to promise that and possibly more due to the outpouring support from the community and the success of the event last year. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.

Don't let the photo fool you, the piggy that was running from the two chasers was perfectly fine the whole time. According to organizers, the pig and chicken chases are going to make a return to this year's Family Fun Night on May 3. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.

Here's a reminder of what the mud pit of 2015's Tug O War competition looked like. According to press releases, it looks as though teams wanting to compete and have fun this year can choose to do either water or mud, or both. Photo by Stephanie Frehner.

I believe that both pig and chicken chasing events are barbaric and cruel. The caption says the pig was fine the whole time, but did they ask the pig? Just because it was physically unharmed, that doesn’t mean it was “fine.”

  2. Michelle Poe says:

Chasing a greased pig and chicken is not fun. It is ANIMAL ABUSE!!! Please cancel this event so we can teach our children to have run without torturing and harassing animals.

  3. debi takak says:

I find this pig n chicken race to be barbarucic n horrifying for these animals. Not to mention deadly.Shame on you.

  4. jessica austin says:

A pig chase??? What is wrong with you people thats a living animal… That is animal cruelty!!!!!!! Its one thing to slaughter an animal to feed your animal… but to tourment it just to have “fun” makes me sick!!!!!

  5. I find the chicken n pig race to be cruel for these aninals.I have read where it can n has scared them to death. Please eliminate this from the family fun

  6. Stephanie says:

  7. michelle says:

I will never go to an event where an animal is tourchered for any reason. They run for a reason. They are scared. Its been proven they an animal can have heart attack from being scared. What’s that teaching our youth..
