The “Give Me Liberty” was developed by current Mesquite Exchange Club Members and has reached a national level among Exchange Club members and fifth grade teachers across the United States. The program is designed to teach the principals of the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the history of those who have bravely fought to give us liberty and the wars they battled.

On Thursday, March 31 a group of 65 fifth grade students at Bowler Elementary School celebrated one milestone toward their success in the program with an ice cream social.

Bowler Elementary students are extremely proud of their learned knowledge of the City of Mesquite and surrounding area, the State of Nevada and the United States.  They have learned the preamble to the Constitution, all 50 states and their capitals, major war dates, the Gettysburg Address, patriotic songs, all four military fight songs, the Bill of Rights, the Star Spangled Banner and its history, the names of all 44 presidents in alphabetical order, how to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in sign language and so much more.  The program is well designed and the kids have to complete 20 requirements (17 required and three optional) before they gain their award.

Approximately 65 students have completed all requirements in one phase of the Mesquite Exchange Club’s ‘Give Me Liberty’ program and celebrated with an ice cream social on March 31, 2016. Photo submitted.

The work isn’t easy for anyone and it involves a lot of memorization. The voluntary program is above and beyond their regular classroom studies.

Exchange Club members can’t help but feel a great deal of pride and excitement in their program which has taken off in record time. “It shows us that kids aren’t lazy and uninterested. They’ve all achieved a great deal of knowledge and they work very hard to gain that award. It’s certainly an achievement they can be very proud of,” said exchange club members at a luncheon held on March 29. “We’re very excited for people to hear about it. It’s valuable knowledge of America that we all should have.”
