Fuqua leads Bulldog baseball team over Pirates 5-3

Despite being out hit 10-2, the Virgin Valley High School Bulldog baseball team surprised the favored Moapa Valley High School Pirates 5-3 on Thursday afternoon, April 21 in the Dawg Pound. Bulldog starter Dillon Fuqua went the distance for the win.

The Dawgs put up two runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead on one hit, taking advantage of poor Moapa Valley pitching and defense problems. Bulldogs Jayson Brooks and Easton Jensen got on base after being hit by the Pirate starter. Both scored on an error and a ground out. The second inning runs came by way of a hit batter, bases on ball and a single by Jayden Perkins.

The Bulldogs would add one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacob Ruvalcaba reached first as a hit batter, took second on a wild pitch, went to third and scored on a another wild pitch giving the Dawgs a 5-1 advantage going into the seventh and last inning. The Pirates would rally scoring two runs on four singles. Fuqua bore down and got the next two Pirates on ground balls to end the game. Despite allowing 10 hits Fuqua pitched around any adversary and had great defensive support.

The win gives the Bulldogs a 2-8 record in league play and 6-15 overall. The six wins are the highest in more than four years.

 

Lady Dawgs fall to Pirates 6-3

The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early 4-0 against the Pirates after two innings of play Thursday afternoon, April 21 at the Dawg Pound. Bulldog control problems from the mound has been the Lady Dawgs bane this year. Two base on balls set up the Pirates first two runs in the first followed by two runs in the second on two singles.

The Bulldogs rallied in the third inning cutting the Pirates lead to 4-3. Kezney Crompton began the inning with a single over second base, Calee Clem followed with another single, a Pirate error brought in two runs and the third came in on a Janella Fiso two bagger. The Pirate pitcher bore down and stopped the Bulldog rally.

The Pirates added two more insurance runs in the top of the fourth on three hits making the final score 6-3 in favor of the visiting Pirates. Clem and Fiso led the Lady Dawgs with two hits each. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 5-4 in 1-A Sunrise League play and 12-10 overall. The Dawgs are now tied with TECH for fourth place and the final playoff spot.
