Tough week for Bulldog ball clubs

By Lou Martin

The Virgin Valley High School Bulldog ball clubs faced some of their toughest opponents in 1-A Sunrise League play this week and came away 0-4 against Moapa Valley and Boulder City. The Lady Dawgs lost to Moapa 13-3 and were blasted by Boulder 16-1. On the baseball side the Bulldogs lost 4-0 to the Pirates and 12-1 to the Eagles. The Eagles and Pirates lead the league with identical 4-0 records as of April 1.

First innings have been the bane for Virgin Valley High School Bulldog baseball as they gave up 10 runs in the top of the first to a hard hitting Eagles team from Bolder City High School Friday afternoon, April 1 in the Dawg Pound.

The Eagles sent up 13 batters in the first bringing 10 across on seven hits and two Bulldog errors. The big blow was a base clearing shot by Eagle Peyton Koopman over the left field wall. The Bulldogs settled down allowing only two runs over the next four innings but fell 12-1.

Meanwhile Eagle pitcher Preston VanDiest had a no-hitter going into the top of the fifth until Bulldog lead-off batter Jayden Perkins laid down a perfect bunt for a single. It would be the only hit given up by VanDiest in the game. VanDiest struck out eight Bulldogs for the win.

The Dawgs fared a little better in their loss at Moapa Wednesday March 30, losing 4-0 in a well-pitched game by both hurlers. Pirates thrower Koby Frei and Bulldog pitcher Dillon Fuqua were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the fifth when the Pirates put two runs on the scoreboard to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth for a 4-0 victory.

Frei struck out 13 Bulldogs on his way to a one hit victory. The only Bulldog hit being a surprise bunt by Jayden Perkins. Fuqua allowed four unearned runs, striking out seven Pirates in a losing effort. The Bulldogs record fell to 0-4 in Sunrise play and 3-10 overall. The Dawgs next home game will be on Monday April 11 against the Del Sol Dragons.
