New Caregivers Support Group Begins

A new caregiver and support group has started in Mesquite and is already being well received with over 25 people attending their most recent meetings.

“Mesquite Caregivers Support Group,” is a part of Virgin Valley Family Services of Mesquite, and several within the medical community have come out in support.

LuAnn Lundquist, Founder and Director of Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society in St. George, is starting the new support group, and is ready to introduce to the group MemoryMatters, another group she has formed in Southern Utah.

The mission is simple: to support individuals and families who have found it necessary to provide care to loved ones suffering from any illness, focusing mainly on memory loss care, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but is open for all caregivers who find themselves caring for family members who are homebound.

The group meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at First Baptist Church at 700 Hardy Way. These are non-denominational meetings focusing on getting as much information and help to caregivers.

The next meeting will be held on Feb. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The first hour is informational, and the second hour has breakout sessions because no two caregivers go through the exact same thing given the progression or stage of the disease in which their loved ones are facing. Truly one size does not fit all.

Those attending will receive a special notebook with up-to-date information on social, local, state, and federal agencies, and whatever else the caregivers need at that moment.

Everyone who is a caregiver can find the help they need through Mesquite Caregivers Support Group.

They’re also working towards a community event at the Mesquite Senior Center on March 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature an attorney, pharmacist, and social worker.
