The Mesquite Elks held their ‘Law and Order’ luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 27 to honor those who serve on Mesquite’s Police and Fire Departments.
Honored at the ceremony were those who paid the ultimate price for their dedication to the job in both fire rescue and police officer positions. Candles were lit for both departments in remembrance of those lives lost.
Mesquite Fire Chief, Kash Christopher, led the ceremony honoring those who dedicated their lives to going above and beyond the call of duty to help train and improve the department and community volunteers.
Spencer Lewis received the high honor of fire fighter of the year for his outstanding off-duty work. Lewis heads up the Fire Explorer program which helps to train and mentor Mesquite’s youth in paramedic, EMT and fire training and keeps them vested in the city of Mesquite.

Martinez and Ryan Thornton. Mike Benham was also recognized for his leadership as the new director of the Community Emergency Response Team.
Police Officer of the year went to Sgt. Brad Tobler for his outstanding work in the corrections division. Tobler has taken on many responsibilities to ensure the Mesquite City Jail is a safe and secure facility for both the Mesquite Police Department Officers and the many outside agencies who utilize the jail facility according to Police Chief Troy Tanner.
Also honored for their outstanding work in the dispatch department were civilian employees Kristine Fowles and Mike Bennett.
The luncheon was attended by many although, true to their duty and commitment to Mesquite, many of the units were called away to take care of the car accidents and police calls that came in that day. They truly are the good guys of Mesquite.
