Joseph Carlton Orvis (Jay), 67, of Mesquite, passed away on Sept. 28, 2015. He was born on Jan. 6, 1948 to Maxine and Joseph Orvis in Grass Valley, Calif. During his lifetime he lived in California and Nevada. In 2011 he moved to Mesquite from Carson City.
Jay loved living in the desert and especially in his home in Mesquite. He retired after 30 years of service from the U. S. Forest Service. His last assignment was Timber Sales Administrator, Forest Service, Humboldt National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin.
Jay enjoyed skiing, traveling, reading, music, photography, cooking, great restaurants, movies and television, coffee, friends, family and a lot of conversation. His niece, Jessica, would always say, “Ask Jay, he knows everything!” because he was so knowledgeable.
Jay was a wonderful and devoted significant other, uncle, grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Joseph, and his beloved Uncle Ernest.
He is survived by his significant other, whom he called his wife, Gloria Balderas; two nieces, whom he considered his daughters, and their husbands, Suzanne and Marcel Fielding of Fresno, Calif. And Jessica and Placido (Jr.) Rodriguez of Selma, Calif.; two grandchildren, Caleb Mateo Rodriguez of Selma and Midori Fielding of Lodi, Calif.; and four granddogs, Milo, Millie, Ramsey and Dottie; as well as some very close friends which he considered like family.
A celebration of Jay’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016 at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 1030 W. Pioneer Blvd in Mesquite. Come and have “A last cup of coffee with Jay,” and share your warmest memories of him.
