For those interested in hunting the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services is sponsoring a Hunter’s Safety class held by the NDOW (Nevada Division of Wildlife) to take place on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mesquite Community/Senior Center, 102 West Old Mill Road. The class teaches individuals the fundamentals of hunting and how to avoid a hunting accident.
The deadline to register with the Mesquite Recreation Center and online with NDOW is Saturday, Dec. 19.
“Hunter safety education is a mandatory program for those individual that are interested in hunting that requires a license or draw tag,” said Nicholas Montoya, The Departments Director and NDOW Instructor. “The program is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to the many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, wildlife identification, the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws, and firearm/archery safety. Hunter education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics.”
“Hunting can bring you a lifetime of enjoyment if you are safe and responsible.” Montoya added. The Today’s Hunters Workbook must be fully completed and brought back to class on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016. You must pre-register with the NDOW online after you pick up all class room materials at the Mesquite Recreation Center. The workbook must be 100 percent complete prior to attending class. Class size is limited (20).
There is a minimum age required to take the class which is 12 years old. The parent(s) or guardian(s) of minor students are required to check-in the minor student(s) with NDOW instructor(s) at the beginning of class and pick-up their student(s) from the instructor(s) at class end. Parents or guardians are also solely responsible for student transportation and should notify the instructor(s) at the beginning of class if someone other than a parent or guardian is picking up the student after class.
