It was a night not fit for man or beast except for a few tough lady Bulldogs as they braved the cold wet night to come away with a 32-6 league opening win over the Miners from Sunrise Mountain.

The first half of Friday night’s win was a defensive struggle as the Dawgs battled the rain and the Miners to a 6-6 tie after one half of play in the Dawg Pound. Katie Zuniga scored on a one yard run to give the Dawgs a six point lead. The Miners countered with a long run inside the Dawgs 10 yard line but the tough Bulldog defense held at the one giving the ball back to their offense.

The teams struggled in the rain before Sunrise Mountain tied the game 6-6 with 2 minutes remaining in the first half of play. The comments from the coaches on the sidelines were of a confused state as they could not understand how the Miners could stay with the Dawgs. The Dawgs easily beat the Miners last weekend in the Bulldog Invitational.

The second half of the game was all Bulldogs as they outscored the Miners 26-0 behind Zuniga and Elizabeth DeLeon. Zuniga added another touchdown and DeLeon added two more to give the Dawgs a 32-6 victory. The win gave the Dawgs three wins for the week and a 7-1 overall record and 1-0 in important league play.

The Dawgs beat Sierra Vista Wednesday night, Dec. 9 by a score of 33-13. Leading the way for the Dawgs were Zuniga with two T.D.’s and DeLeon with one on the ground. Quarterback Kallie Graves had 176 yards through the air for a T.D. to receiver Madison Cheney plus added one on a keeper. Makenzie Leishman and Dylan Bryant led receivers with 4 receptions each.
