Virgin Valley High School track coach Gary Hartman called on the community to help raise funds to purchase pole vault standards for the track team and the community responded. Sixteen teams consisting of 32 players teed off on the Sun City putting greens Saturday morning, Oct. 31. Each player contributed $15 to compete for prizes donated by local merchants.

“We need to raise $1,500 to meet our fund raising goals to purchase the standards,” said Coach Hartman. He thanked the following businesses for helping make the day a success: Sun City Mesquite for allowing the use of their grounds; Conestoga Golf for scoring cards and four passes to play their course; and two rounds of golf each by Falcon Ridge and Oasis Golf Courses.

Hartman’s longtime friend from Oglala, Nebraska John Lund explained the rules of the tournament before a shotgun start got the ball rolling. At the end of the day David Clark and partner Stan Woolever won first place, Dawn and Doug Parsons garnered second, Ilene Farmer and Debbie Huffer took home third place, Orville Winchester and Curt Bennett won the fourth place prize.

The competition was another great event for a good cause plus it showed the dedication of Gary Hartman as a volunteer coach for the high school program.
