As the Southern Nevada Symphony Orchestra prepares for its third season, they welcome a special violinist who has travelled all the way from Switzerland.

Milena Amhof arrived to her host home in Moapa Valley back in August to attend Moapa Valley High School for the 2015-16 school year.
Having played the violin for over 10 years now, when she saw the advertisement for the SNSO seeking musicians, it was a no-brainer for her. She’s played since she was five, and cites her early exposure to classical music as her the origin for her love of the violin.
“I came home from kindergarten one day wanting to play the violin,” Amhof said. “I love the music. I love classic music, but I also love what [the violin] can do,” explaining that there are several styles of music that the violin can be used for. “Modern, classical, baroque, soundtrack, everything.”
“She’s an exceptional violinist,” said Selmer Spitzer, the Conductor and organizer for the SNSO. “It’ll be a good orchestra this year.”
Aside from her skills as a violinist, she also ran Cross Country and plans to participate in Flag Football this Winter. The sport differs from those she has played in her home country, so she looks forward to the experience.
Amhof’s debut will occur with the symphony’s season debut on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Casablanca Showroom at 950 W. Mesquite Blvd.
While she is just one of 15 violinists, she is excited to be a part of the upcoming season.
The anticipated program for “A Musical Thanksgiving” will include works such as themes from The Lone Ranger, Superman Returns and the Romeo & Juliet Overture as well as other familiar pieces that many will recognize easily.
The SNSO has grown to 50 members this year, when they are all present, although, as Spitzer pointed out to the MLN, that can often be difficult due to schedule conflicts with other local events. Last year, at the finale show honoring veterans, Spitzer directed just 45 members.
“It’ll be a concert everyone can really enjoy,” said Spitzer.

Tickets have been available at the local outlets as well as online since Oct. 15. However, Spitzer suggests that people buy their tickets from the front desk of the Casablanca’s Front Desk if they are unable to make it to the other outlets. Prices are posted as $15 for general admission and $25 for VIP reserved booths, although those must be purchased in packs of four spots.
