Small Crowd – Great Performance – Fun Evening

On Saturday, September 19, I attended a wonderful concert that Blair Adam, the new President of Mesquite Arts Council (MAC), spent a lot of time and energy bringing to Mesquite.  The event was a Tribute to Waylon Jennings, performed by Bob Murray.

Waylon Jennings, one of the greats of the country music world, was a singer, songwriter and guitarist who recorded 60 albums and had 16 No. 1 country singles in a career that spanned five decades and performed duets, such as “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, “Luckenbach” and “Good Hearted Woman” with Willie Nelson . He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2001.

Bob Murray, of Oatman, Az, is a multi-talented performer who has dedicated his talent to

honoring and preserving Jennings work.  On Saturday, he gave a masterful performance. The only disappointment of the evening was size of the crowd – it was very small. Since this town is filled with folks who complain, “There is nothing to do in this town” and I know that many country music fans live here, I was surprised that more folks didn’t attend.

Those of us who attended were welcomed by Renee Morris, a lovely Mesquite Showgirl.

She showed off the showgirl’s trademark feathers and sequins and added her well-known mile wide grin. Members of the MAC crew sold tickets, seated folks, answered questions and made us all happy to be there.

Perhaps, a less seasoned performer would have used the size of the crowd as an excuse to scale back the show – not Bob. He performed all 24 songs listed in the program, shared Waylon Jennings trivia and history with his small audience and recognized/thanked all the military folks (current and retired) who attended.

Those who missed this performance lost out on the best $5 deal this town has seen in a long time. To avoid missing out again, check the Mesquite Arts Council schedule for the remainder of their season. MAC has a Face-book page, the schedule is published in the Mesquite Local News or you can contact Blair at 801-815-6812 or badams4u@yahoo.com for information.
