The first half found the teams in a defensive stalemate as they battled evenly for 40 minutes. “We need to wear them down,” exhorted Bulldog Coach Bob Snell during the halftime break. “We need to make quicker passes and play our game.”

The Dawgs had opportunities to score in the first period as forwards Abbie Barnum and Karla Correa, playing together for the first time since early in pre-season due to injuries, had multiple shots on goal. Two Barnum corner kicks were easily picked up by the Miners goal keeper as Bulldog players seemed to shy away from the box.

The Bulldogs received a scare 11 minutes into the second half of play when Barnum went down on a head kick. Two minutes later Barnum returned and made a huge cross field pass into the box hitting Correa for the game’s first goal 13 minutes into the half. The Dawgs defense continued to give their forwards the opportunity to score but great play from the Miners goal keeper kept the Dawgs at bay.

Bulldog Marlene Quiarte gave the Dawgs some breathing room striking goal with three minutes remaining in the match upping the Dawgs lead to 2-0. Bulldog goal keeper Spencer Green earned her ninth shutout of the season and fourth in a row. “They are one of the best teams in the league and I’m sure we will see them again,” added Coach Snell.

The win ties the Dawgs with TECH with identical 6-1-1 records dropping the Miners to 5-2-1. The Dawgs last tasted defeat on Sep. 28 when the Roadrunners shut out the Dawgs 2-0. The Dawgs travel to Chaparral on the Oct. 14 and Desert Pines on Oct. 16 before returning home to host TECH in a pivotal league matchup.

Bulldogs defeated the Eagles 2-0 Thursday Oct. 8 in Boulder City. Spencer Green earned her eighth shutout of the season. Madison Cheney had both goals on assists from Kennedi Ludvigson and Taylor Waite.
