Prior to taking the field Friday afternoon, Sep. 25 against Desert Pines High School Jaguars, Virgin Valley High School soccer team coach Bob Snell stated,” We need to shut down the other team. Hope for a great game and we’ll be happy with a 0-0 outcome. Our injured players will return by the Oct. 6 game. We need to play to our strength which is defense.”

The plan worked as the Dawgs defense controlled most of the game and came away with a surprising 3-0 win over the Jaguars.

The Jaguars came out on attack mode for the first 25 minutes of the match before the Dawgs defense slowed their offense down giving the Dawgs an opportunity to attack the Jaguar side of the field. Bulldog midfielder Marlene Quiarte got the Dawgs onto the scoreboard with a great shot from 25 yards out at the 30 minute mark giving the Dawgs a 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs controlled the rest of the first half getting one more good shot on goal and two corner kicks. “We dominated the last 15 minutes of the game,” said Snell. “Keep it up and we can finish the week well.”

Snell’s second half comments sat well for his young squad as they continued their offensive push on the Jaguars controlling the ball with defensive tenacity. The Dawgs had three straight corner kicks but could not take advantage.

Bulldog Karla Correa had a great look 15 minutes into the second half but her shot sailed wide. Correa would not fail on her second attempt, taking a long assist from goalkeeper Spencer Green behind the Jaguars defense and crushing it into the net for a 2-0 Bulldog lead with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

The ploy worked so well for the Dawgs they repeated the goal. Correa outraced Green’s goal kick and went one on one with the Jaguars goalkeeper. Correa won, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Dawgs. The game ended shortly thereafter.

The win kept the Dawgs on track for a playoff spot with a 2-0-1 league record. The Dawgs travel to TECH on Monday, Sep. 28 before returning to host Del Sol on Wednesday Sep. 30.
