The Virgin Valley High School Bulldog football team’s defense pitched a shutout Friday night against Del Sol High School 48-0 in a Sunrise League opener. The defense gave the offense opportunities to score and they did rolling up over 400 yards in a balanced attack. “We needed this win,” said Bulldog coach Yori Ludvigson. “They (Del Sol) knocked us out of the playoffs last year and we could not let that happen again.”

The Dawgs won the toss and immediately put points on the scoreboard. Quarterback Hogan Fowles hit a streaking Jarret Tietjen for a 76 yard touchdown 56 seconds into the game. Cesar Zarate’s point after kick was good making the score 7-0. The Bulldog defense stopped the Dragons on their first possession giving the ball back to the Dawgs, The Dragons defense showed their mettle early holding the Dawgs to zero points at the end of one period.

The Bulldogs Zarate added a 38 yard field goal early in the second period upping the Dawgs lead to 10-0. The teams battled evenly until 3:18 remained in the half. The Dawgs took advantage of the Dragons five in the box defense sending Cody Jones around end for a 54 yard T.D. Zarate added the P.A.T. giving the Dawgs a 17-0 advantage. The Dawgs were not finished as the defense swarmed the Dragons forcing a sack by Marlan Felshaw and a fumble recovery by Jayden Perkins on the Dragons 16 yard line. Bulldog Kai Mitchell went over from 8 yards out for another score and a 23-0 advantage. The P.A.T. failed.

The Bulldog defense forced a Dragon sack and an interception by Josh Bishop setting up T.D. runs by Mitchell and Q.B. Fowles giving the Dawgs a huge lead of 35-0 after three periods of play.

The Dragons could not take advantage of Bulldog reserves in the final period as the Dawg defense continued to dominate both lines. Bishop added another T.D. run and Tony Urias at Q.B. finished the scoring with a 17 yard keeper making the final score 48-0. “We were ready for this game,” said coach Ludvigson. “Our work in the weight room paid off, the kids are stronger, quicker and are hungry for the win.” Fowles finished with 220 yards on 8-23 passes. Jones had 95 yards on eight carries to lead the Dawgs.

The Dawgs travel to Rancho High School Friday, September 18 for their last non-league game of the year.
