The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Watch for Mesquite and other areas that is effective from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening, Aug. 16.

The Heat Watch includes all areas below 4,000 feet for portions of southern Nevada, southeast California and northwest Arizona.

Temperatures in Mesquite, Las Vegas, Barstow, and the Morongo Basin will range from 108 to 111 while temps in Laughlin, Needles and Lake Havasu City will hit an expected 115 degrees. Death Valley temperatures are predicted to hit 122.

While the expected highs may be in the normal range for this time of year, the NWS said people may be less acclimated to the heat because temperatures were below normal in July for most of the affected areas.

The NWS warned that heat exhaustion and heat stroke will be possible during the watch period. Hot temperatures will create dangerous situations in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of water, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors, the NWS advised.
