The sounds of ‘hut, hut’ and helmets hitting pads will again permeate the hill as Coach Yori Ludvigson returns for his second season at the helm of the Virgin Valley High School football team. Ludvigson went 4-5 in 2014 with one of the youngest squads in recent memory. The Bulldogs return 31+ players from last year’s team with additional support from undefeated 2014 freshman and J. V. squads. The Dawgs finished behind state champion Moapa Valley (13-0) and runner up Desert Pines (11-2). Chaparral (5-5) also finished ahead of the Dawgs.

The Bulldog coaching staff greeted 94 prospective players on August 11 for this year’s freshman, J.V and varsity squads. “We are so advanced compared with last season”, said Ludvigson after the first week of practice. “We had 77 of the players at football camp this summer. We did not expect 30 freshman players to begin practice and hope to whittle down the squad after scrimmages on August 22 in Las Vegas. The competition amongst ourselves is fierce as we have a lot more depth compared to last year’s squad. The kids are stronger, faster and have a year’s experience under their belt and it shows. The confidence level is up as the kids battle each other for playing time. Are intent is to keep 30 kids on the varsity squad and the rest split between freshman and J.V. teams. Hogan Fowles will be taking the snaps after leading our J.V. team to an undefeated season. He is getting better every day. Fowles will be throwing to Zach Barnum and Diego Burriel in the slots backed up by Tony Urias and Nick Cox. Big Chase Henderson will be a strong factor as he works out of the tight end position. Our running game features senior Kai Mitchell, and Cody Jones, backed up by speedsters Jarrett Tietjen, Marcelo Lara and an occasional run by Henderson out of the fullback spot. Jaden Hollingshead and Arden Bundy will anchor our offensive line. Our defense has a year’s experience behind them and will play man to man from the corners. We will count heavily on defensive backs Barnum, Lara and Jones. Our defensive line will feature Jayden Dalton, Bundy, Marian Felshaw and a host of experienced Bulldogs. Sophomore Jayden Perkins will get plenty of work on both sides of the football.”

The Moapa Valley Pirates are favored to repeat as they also return key players in quarterback Nate Cox, wide receiver R.J. Hubert and tight end Jay Mortensen plus a veteran line. The Pirates defeated the Desert Pine Jaguars 42-36 in last year’s championship game. The Jaguars meanwhile will return sophomore Q.B. Markell Grayson who threw for four touchdowns in a 42-6 win over the Dawgs and receiver Trevor Nofoa. Their lines will be anchored by 285lb Samuel Poutasi and Anthony Smith who have nine scholarship offers between them. Smith is rated the top prospect in Nevada by Rivals.com. The Dawgs will need to shore up their pass defense as they were riddled by last year’s three leaders 118-20. On a positive note the Dawgs will host both the Pirates and Jaguars in the Dawg Pound. The Dawgs open the season at Cedar High School (Utah) on Friday, August 28 and face Western High School at home September 4. The Dawgs defeated the Warriors last year 41-13.
