Walt Alder won the People’s Choice award for his abstract art piece titled “Transcending Texture” while Jean Wiensch took home the Sponsor’s Choice for her exhibit entry named “Red Velvet.”

Over 43 entries vied for the top award in the Abstract Art exhibit which runs through August 29 and is sponsored by the Eureka Casino Resort.

“This is an excellent opportunity for gallery visitors to see a variety of artwork that allows each person to take an active role of interpretation and reaction to every piece.  Abstract art abandons recognizable images in favor of the non-objective colors, shapes, size, brushstrokes, and other physical attributes,” Linda Faas, VVAA member, explained.

“I started taking photographs when I was 19 years old. I used to photograph wild animals almost exclusively. When I got tired of that I switched to landscape photography,” Alder explained. His winning photograph was taken in the Gold Butte area.

Wiensch said her favorite type of art is abstract painting which Gerri Chasko, Eureka representative agreed with. “We had a hard time picking our favorite exhibit entry for the Sponsor’s Choice but several of us ultimately agreed on Jean’s piece.”

Honorable Mention awards were given to Geraldine Zarate, William Wool, Susan Holladay, Mike Fletcher, DeeDee Love, and Bunny Wiseman.
