Rich Killian with his pastel art drawing

By Barb King

I began the free adult art program called “Stay Smart With Art” on October 4, 2014, sponsored by the Virgin Valley Artist’s Association.  It is a 19-week program that takes place on Saturdays from 10 AM until Noon.

Being a senior, and never having any art lessons before, except in my teen years, I cannot brag enough about how much I have learned.  I thought it would be fun to learn something new.

The first 6 lessons were in pencil, ink and colored pencil art, taught by Diana Coonradt.  Included were demonstrations, techniques, tips, written instructions and use of equipment to help the students craft their own art.

The next 3 lessons were in watercolor, taught by Char Lang, followed by 2 weeks of pastels, taught by Rich Killian.  Diana Coonradt returned to teach acrylic painting, which is in its 3rd week on April 11, 2015.

The rest of April and May will have 3 classes in oil painting. The last two classes in June will be taught by Jean Wiensch in three-dimension.

You can join these classes at any time, even if you are a beginner like me.  The motto is “Where there is a will, there is a way”.

The classes are no charge, but if you wish to donate $3.00 to the program, it is tax deductible.  Classes are small, so there’s lots of individual attention paid to helping you succeed. I was even able to do extra homework for the next class and show my finished product.

Please join us in our last six classes beginning on April 11 in the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery Classroom at 15 W. Mesquite Blvd.  Call 702-346-1338 for more info.
