Congressional District # 4 Mobile Office In Mesquite

We have been notified by Congressman Cresent Hardy’s office; they will be visiting Mesquite on the third Thursday of each month until further notified. The hours will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. At the Mesquite Community/Senior Center located at 102 West Old Mill Rd.

The Congressman’s office will have a representative from his office available to assist with issues in the areas of Medicare, Social Security, Veterans Affairs, IRS and other Federal agencies. Congressman Hardy’s office next visit will be March 19, 2015. We ask that you please make an appointment with the Congressman’s Office, (702) 912-1634.

 

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASS

Summer is fast approaching and for those responsible young adults looking for certification of becoming a lifeguard, the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services has set up special times and dates with the City of St. George Aquatics Division and they are offering a Lifeguard Training Class. The class will run Monday through Friday, March 30 – April 3, 2015 (Clark County School District, Spring Break).

Classes are scheduled for Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 4:p.m. All times will be Mountain Standard Time. The classes will be held at the Sand Hollow Aquatics Center, Instructed by Michele Howells.

This class is American Red Cross approved the lifeguard training class which instructs and prepares participants on the knowledge and physical skills needed to respond to an emergency with in the aquatics area.  Class is limited to 20 students.

To attend the class, you must be able to complete a 300 yards swim using the free style stroke, breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes without using your hands and retrieve a 10 pound brick from a depth of 10 feet of water and swimming 25 yards with the brick. The swimming tests will be held the first day of class, please bring your swimming suits and a towel; every day. The deadline for registration will be March 23, 2015. There will be a recertification class for lifeguards looking to extend their skills for another 2 years. The course will be set up for Friday, April 3, 2015, 10:00AM. Please call Sand Hollow Aquatics to sign up for this Re-Cert.

 

Virgin Valley Little League Night with the Las Vegas 51’s

All friends & family of Little League players are invited to join the Las Vegas 51s for an out-of-this-world baseball experience on Saturday, April 25 beginning at 7:05 p.m. at Cashman Field in Las Vegas.

All that purchase a ticket will receive a reserved ticket, a Las Vegas 51s hat and the first 2,500 in attendance receive a Jacob deGrom 51s Jersey.

Tickets for all parents, family and friends are $12 each with a portion of proceeds going back to the Virgin Valley Little League. Cash will only be accepted when purchasing the tickets. SWIM TEAM “THE MANTA RAYS”

SWIMMERS, The City of Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Services is now taking registrations for this Summer’s Swim Team, “The Manta Rays”. This is a both a recreational and competitive level swim team program that focuses on teaching and promoting good sportsmanship, encourages self-esteem and team work.

The team will officially begin practice on June 8 and will run until August, practicing every Monday through Thursday. There will be 2 practices; an 8 a.m. advanced practice for the more seasoned and competitive swimmers and a beginner/intermediate practice that will start at 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The Swim Team coaches will determine what level and time your child will be practicing. For those individuals that want to get going sooner, we will have non mandatory practice (Open Swim) the open swim for participants will begin May 12, 2015 Tuesdays and Thursday from 5 – 7 p.m. until school is out, and then we will begin the official morning practices on June 8.

The Purpose and Philosophy of the program is to practice and develop strong swimming strokes and improve personal times and skills. This program emphasizes personal improvement. The Departments purpose is to provide opportunities where youth can learn the fundamentals of a sport and learn sportsmanship through participation. The ultimate goal is to encourage skill development and foster a positive attitude. There is a program fee which includes practice four days per week, T-shirt, and two home meets. Away meets are also available for swimmer participation. All swimmers wanting to join the program should be able to swim a minimum of 25 yards in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke, or have a Red Cross Level 4 certificate.

 

Major League Baseball PITCH, HIT & RUN

The City of Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Department in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB). We will host a free event The Scotts, Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition for the local youth Boys & Girls.

The event will be March 17, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Pioneer Park Complex Field # 1 & # 2.

The Pitch, Hit & Run is the official skill competition of Major League Baseball, This grass roots program is designed to provide the youth with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

The competition is divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10/, 11/12, 13/14 and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at a Major League Ball Park and the National Finals at the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The individual Pitching, Hitting and Running Champions, along with the All-Around Champion in each age group at the local competition will be awarded and advance to the sectional; Level of Competition.

All participants (Boys & Girls) must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have their parent or guardian fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition. You can register the day of the event or before at any time at the Mesquite Recreation Center.

 

Nevada Moves Day

Virgin Valley Elementary School (VVES) is hosting this great event and in partnership with The City of Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Department.

Come join the fun as VVES celebrates Nevada Moves Day on Wednesday March 18, 2015.  Walking or bicycling with your child to school is a great way to help children learn and practice safe walking and biking skills, promote health, identify safer walking routes, and improve air quality.  There’s not a better way to start your day.

If you do have to drive that day, consider parking a block away at the Mesquite Recreation Center and walking the remainder of the way to school.  Our back parking lot is available (Mesquite Recreation Center) for those of you with car pools.  Groups of students can be dropped off and then safely walk a block together to school. Times will be from 8:30-9:00 a.m.

 

2015 SPRING BREAK CAMP

PARENTS, are you ready for Spring Break? If you aren’t leaving town over Spring Break, keep your youth entertained and active. Sign-ups can be done at the Mesquite Recreation Center or on-line: www.mesquitenv.gov The Department of Athletics & Leisure Services Spring Break Camp 2015 Program, this is a phenomenal chance for your child to continue on their path to success and staying active. The program runs from March 30 to April 3 (Monday – Friday) from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. This is a great opportunity for your child to receive five days of programmed events and activities at our spring break camp.  The camp is designed for boys and girls ages 5 – 10 years old.  Must be potty trained. There is a fee please inquire with the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services.

Children will be challenged daily with different activities, arts and crafts, agility competitions, dance, water activities and fun sports games.  Children are required to bring a towel, swim suit (A life jacket is required if they cannot swim), a sack lunch a small snack and a bottle of water. All activities will be held at the Mesquite Recreation Center and the Deuce Facility.

 

YOUTH T-BALL & COACH PITCH

Youth T-BALL & Coach Pitch for Boys & Girls is scheduled to begin April 6, 2015, for Girls and Boys ages 4 – 5 & 6 – 7.  The deadline to register is Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Registrations are being taken now. If spots are available after the registration deadline, those wanting to fill the available positions Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

If there is any one that is interested in coaching, volunteering please inquire with the Leisure Services Department there is form you must fill out, we appreciate everyone’s involvement and dedication to the program and especially the youth of the valleys’.
