The Virgin Valley High School Lady Dawgs won a hard fought softball game Wednesday afternoon 12-11 over the Cowboys from Chaparral High School. Bulldog pitcher Adri Wakefield in relief, struck out a Cowboy with the winning runs on base, to end the game. Bulldog starter Savannah Price pitched her game of the season leading the Dawgs to a 12-7 lead going into the Cowboys last at bat. Price, obviously tiring, walked the first batter and hit the next batter with no outs on the scoreboard. Price fell behind the third batter 0-2 before coach Travis Griffith pulled her for Wakefield. Wakefield walked the batter loading the bases with no outs. The Cowboys scored two runs before second baseman Emma Barnum took a grounder, tagged a runner and threw out the batter at first for a huge double play. “The double play by Emma was huge,” said an elated coach Griffith after the game. Two more Cowboy runs came in on a single to left field before Wakefield bore down and struck out the last batter for the win.

The Dawgs trailed early in the game 3-0 going into the bottom of the third inning before scoring five runs with two outs to take a 5-3 lead. Taylor Barnum’s double was the big hit of the inning. The Dawgs added three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take the 12-7 lead into the seventh and last inning. “Huge win for us, it boost our confidence especially for Adri,”said Griffith. “The kids are working hard despite the losses and are improving weekly.” The Dawgs league record went to 1-1 and 1-9 overall. The Bulldogs will host Moapa Valley today at 3:30.
