Free computer classes are now being offered at Hughes Middle School. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. parents and/or their students are invited to attend computer training courses. The classes will be held in the 8th grade computer lab beginning March 17. This year the middle school has implemented a school-wide laptop program. While technology can be a powerful tool in the classroom, it is making it necessary for students and parents to become fluent with the use of various programs and devices. Ms. Monica Ruth will be the instructor for the class. She has an extensive background in technology. Before becoming a teacher, she was a software engineer and has a degree in Computer Information Systems. She hopes that parents and students will attend the classes. The classes have an open format. People can attend every class or simply drop-in on an “as needed” basis. There is a flexible curriculum and each person will be taught at their level. Whether a beginner or an advanced user, all people are encouraged to attend. Some of the topics that will be covered are Infinite Campus, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft OneNote, Computer Settings, Internet Intelligence, Parental Controls, Brainfuse (Homework Help), Edmodo and SBAC Testing.
Along with providing free computer trainings, Hughes Middle School also offers free homework help and internet access at the Internet Cafe for students and their parents Monday thru Thursday from 2:30-6:30 p.m. It is also located in the 8th grade building with access from Hafen Lane. There is a teacher available to answer questions and help with homework. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come with their students.
