Do Things Really Happen for a Reason?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

For most of my adult years I’ve been told that everything happens for a reason, but do they really? Is it a myth, or is it a personal choice in which we believe that there are no coincidences in our lives? Many believe… just that. In theory, this belief comes from different religious teachings and backgrounds. It’s comforting in the midst of life events and outcomes for one to say “everything happens for a reason”; knowing God had already planned our lives out for us, prior to birth. In general, people find it reassuring to think that life on earth has a plan mapped out for us, and accidents, things that happen to us – no matter how horrible (or tragic) the event may be, is all part of the master plan for something more divine waiting in our future. But God does not wish pain and suffering, nor does he plan homelessness, to those who have been tormented through natural disasters or otherwise.

The truth is that we live in a world where there is murder, injustice, and a place where horrific crimes are committed; it’s not because they were supposed to happen, unfortunately… they just do. There are very few words we can say when comforting loved ones that might be suffering, but more commonly than not, that familiar phrase comes out, “Everything happens for a reason.” It is then… by the gift of grace, we choose to sit with them willingly (those that suffer from tragedy), never leaving them alone… remaining by their side. We give hope to those that suffer.

There will always be things that happen, which are out of your control; but when bad things happen to good people… this is where one finds out who their true friends really are. It’s part of the learning process of life. Everything that happens to us allows us to take something valuable from it; if you listen closely there is always a positive spin on nearly everything.  Also, meeting new people is vital, as it allows you to learn something new, or possibly create a new friendship or partnership. When this happens, it helps us to grow spiritually, sometimes putting a fresh perspective on an old situation, not to mention on life itself.

So in the end, does everything happen for a reason; no… not everything. I believe that SOME things do, as it changes our current plans, and…or paths, which might lead us to better things, but it’s all in how you look at it. Everyone chooses to look at things differently; hence as to why we are individuals. Hardships in life change the way we think, it also allows us to gain strength in areas of one which was probably needed. Life is a ride and doesn’t always allow us to go with the flow; we make our own waves at times. Whatever happens in your life, good or bad… embrace its’ journey and always look forward. It’s the best advice I can give.

Make your week count.
