It was another difficult week for the Virgin Valley High School Bulldog baseball team as they lost 10-1 to Chaparral on Wednesday and 11-4 to Moapa Valley on Thursday afternoon. Despite the losses the Dawgs showed great promise as there under-class-man continue to improve and impress.
The Bulldogs gave up eight runs in the first two innings of the loss to Chaparral before pitcher freshman Cade Anderson settled down and retired 15 of the next 16 batters before the Dawgs gave up two more runs in the seventh inning. Four early errors by the Dawgs put them in a deep hole which they could not recover from. The Dawgs had four hits all from underclass man. Anderson had two, Layton Woods and Jaden Perkins had one each.

Thursday’s game against the Pirates found the Dawgs leading 4-3 going into the top of the sixth inning before a tiring freshman Dillon Fuqua was pulled after putting two Pirates on base. The Pirates went on to score eight runs in the final two innings to win 11-4. The Bulldogs took an early first inning lead 1-0 on a long double off the bat of Anderson. Fuqua gave up 3 singles and two runs in the third as the Pirates took a 2-1 lead. The Dawgs responded in their half of the inning to tie the game 2-2. The Bulldogs had the opportunity to blow the game wide open in the fourth with four straight singles by Perkins, Woods, Marcello Lara and Koby Smothers to take a 4-3 lead. With two Dawgs on base the Pirate pitcher struck out the next two batters, intentionally walked the hot hitting Anderson before striking out the side with the bases loaded. The Dawgs managed one hit the rest of the way. Leading the Dawgs were Anderson with two doubles and Woods with three singles. The Bulldogs record fell to 0-3 in league play and 1-7 overall. The Dawgs will travel to Boulder City on Tuesday, March 24 before returning on Thursday to host Desert Pines.
